An Afternoon on the Rail Corridor

Edit page

The narration and image captions in this post were drafted by an LLM and then edited by me — take them as rough guides only.

On the afternoon of August 9th, I walked Singapore’s Rail Corridor southward from Hillview down to Ulu Pandan. For an hour and a half, old rails, dense greenery, and weathered truss bridges kept me company the whole way.

Most photos in this post are straight out of camera with AI-crafted LUTs, and the results turned out surprisingly pleasing. For the story behind these LUTs, see my previous post.

A Quick Lens Test

To open, a quick test of this 399-yuan TTArtisan 50mm f/1.8 Neo — a few casual frames. The main part of this post, though, was ultimately shot on zooms.

A dark skybridge spanning white towers, topped with a touch of green

Onto the Corridor

The main event begins. Entering the Rail Corridor near Hillview, you first cross a quiet neighborhood; before long, the iconic black truss bridge comes into view.

Neighborhood buildings and a parked blue car under a bright blue sky

A shadow-dappled walkway with a red awning on the left

A wide street stretching under blue sky, lined with red-roofed shops and green trees

Cars threading between green trees on a sunlit expressway

Sunlight filtering through dense leaves onto a yellow signpost

Cyclists weaving through light and shadow on the leaf-shaded old tracks

Tracks stretching into the distance under the black truss bridge, framed by blue sky and greenery

Along the Old Tracks

Switching to a telephoto to compress the scene, the corridor’s walkers and cyclists melt into the light. And the preserved old rails carry just the right amount of rust.

Sunlight spilling over a forest path as people stroll at ease

Walkers bathed in dappled light on the tree-shaded railway path

Receding figures on the tracks amid lush greenery

The black truss bridge from a low angle, tracks running toward walkers ahead

Close-up of rusted rails stretching toward soft light

Sunlit diverging tracks, greenery pushing up through the gravel

A yellow-and-black striped signpost standing out on the dappled forest path

Deep in the Green

The corridor’s midsection has the thickest shade — and the most dog walkers. Every so often an old milestone or crossing sign slips past, a quiet reminder that the ground underfoot was once the Malayan Railway.

Looking up at a towering tree, its dense canopy blotting out the sky

Sunlight in the green woods falling on a weathered milestone post

Red-shirted cyclists riding the tree-lined path under a bridge

A railway sign and weathered concrete bridge piers amid dense greenery

Sunlight pouring over layers of broad green leaves

A black-and-white striped post standing in thick grass

Sunlight filtering through the canopy onto a boardwalk as visitors amble along

A man in orange walking two dogs at ease down the shaded trail

A woman walking her dog through the woods in dappled light

Bright sun through the trees lighting up a rust-streaked railway sign

Grass growing thick between disused rails under scattered sunlight

A cyclist breezing across an old railway crossing on the shaded path

A walker's silhouette dissolving into light and shadow beneath broad leaves

Hazy light under the bridge as walkers and cyclists pass through the green path

Swaying leaf shadows cast on a weathered concrete wall

Sunlight brightening lush greenery against a rough concrete wall

A signpost and brown wooden railing in sun-dappled greenery

A black-and-yellow striped warning post beside the shaded path

Gnarled branches interlacing overhead as the street stretches on under blue sky

Railway Relics

Reaching the Ulu Pandan stretch, the anime badge I carry came out first for a photo check-in. This area displays quite a few relics of the old railway: an aged carriage panel stamped JOHOR, rust-mottled wheelsets, and a striking yellow train car.

Holding an anime girl badge, railway tracks stretching between green trees behind

The anime badge resting on a rusty rail in soft light

Tracks running straight through a metal truss, walled in by lush greenery

Tracks under the metal truss stretching into dappled shade beyond

White long-petaled flowers blooming quietly in soft light

An orange-yellow vintage train part bearing the JOHOR mark against green trees

A heavily rusted black wheelset resting on the gravel-bedded track

An anime girl sticker on an orange metal panel

A yellow train car parked on the tracks, bathed in soft light through the trees

A man in red walking his white dog across the tracks, the scene washed in golden light

Past five-thirty the light slanted low, gilding people and dogs alike in warm tones — the perfect cue to call it a day and head home.
