Singapore’s National Day is still two weeks away, but the rehearsals run every weekend through July. Marina Bay spends each of them practising for August 9 — the flypast, the performances, the fireworks, nothing left out. What I went to see on this July Saturday was one of those full run-throughs.
Starting at Satay By The Bay
A July afternoon is humid, and the shade is easier to take. Ferns grow out of the tree trunks, water runs through stacked landscaping rocks, and the pond surface is packed tight with lotus leaves.

An Overcast Bay
By half past six the sky had gone fully grey. It is unflattering weather for a skyline — the picture just goes flat — but people were already gathering at the water.
Walking east along the water, the fleet taking part in the rehearsal sits out at sea. Visitors take photos at the railing, and a blue gantry over the water holds up a white projection screen.
Then the helicopters came. One flew low with an outsized Singapore flag slung beneath its belly. It is the easiest part of the whole thing to recognise.
Before Dark
The light drained away. By the time I reached Kallang, the bank was already crowded with tripods, every lens pointed the same direction.
One shell went up at 19:37. Then a long wait.

The real fireworks started at 20:14 and ended at 20:18 — four minutes.
Every photo below was taken inside those four minutes, in shutter order. Together with the 19:37 frame at the end of the last section, these 33 kept their HDR through post.
Heading Home
After the rehearsal ended the crowd started to disperse. Under the warm lights, the frame is all backs.
